Experience The Saratoga Racecourse Like Never Before This SummerAugust 10, 2016 by john
From the inside of a cozy skybox tucked along the roofline of the historic Saratoga Racecourse clubhouse, legendary horse racing announcer Larry Collmus grabs a headset and his signature binoculars as he gears up to call the third race of the day. As the bell rings and the horses jump from the gate, Collmus speaks to the busy Saratoga crowd: “And they’re off!”
For more than 30 years, Collmus has been calling thoroughbred races across the country - from Belmont, to Santa Anita, to American Pharaoh’s Triple Crown call in 2015. Now, as the voice of NYRA, Collmus has made the Saratoga Racecourse his home.
As the horses make their final turn for the finish line, the crowd’s cheer grows louder and the excitement in Collmus’ voice builds as he makes the winning call. Following the race, he announces the winners and pay-outs of the bet. It’s a moment of thrill and awe to be present in the announcer’s booth while the race is being called - a moment that most fans don’t get the opportunity to experience. Until now.
This summer, Pavilion Grand Hotel and the Backstretch Employee Service Team (B.E.S.T) are bringing fans and track-goers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch as Larry Collmus calls the third race of the day at the Saratoga Racecourse. Experience the track like never before and see horse racing from a whole new perspective while supporting thousands of backstretch workers. With complimentary grandstand admission, you will engage in a private meet-and-greet with Collmus and be a spectator in the announcers booth during the third race of the day while watching the race with views that most fans won’t ever get the chance to see. Once you are welcomed by the BEST team to start your Third Race Call experience, you are escorted to the literal “top” of the club house with open air panoramic views of the Saratoga Race Course. Founded in 1989, B.E.S.T. is a dynamic non-profit organization which provides free health and social services to the backstretch communities at the Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga Racetracks. The Backstretch Team has been committed to improving the quality of life of the several thousand barn area workers for almost 30 years.
